Hulu Live TV and YouTube TV are currently the best options for PS5 owners looking to stream live TV channels. With the PlayStation 5 being as new as it is, Sony’s console is suffering in terms of third-party app support. While that is expected to change over time, access to live TV streaming remains extremely limited and especially since Sony no longer offers its own PlayStation Vue service.
The PS5 is the latest console to come from Sony and boasts a number of improvements including ray tracing, as well as support for HDMI 2.1, 120fps and 8K displays. Not to mention, access to a variety of platform and device-specific titles. However, one of the disadvantages with such a new device is the access to apps, including live TV streaming apps.
Sony had previously confirmed a number of entertainment apps would be available on the PlayStation 5 at launch, including Netflix, YouTube, and more. In reality, the initial list was fairly minimal with no mention of any live TV streaming service apps. Since then, some of the live TV services have provided updates on the situation.
This article will be continually updated as and when new information becomes available. Last updated: July 2021
AT&T TV NOW on PS5
AT&T TV NOW is not available on PlayStation 5. Once one of the most subscribed to live TV streaming services, AT&T TV NOW has remained limited in the devices that subscribers can use to access the service. This is particularly true in terms of games consoles.
With no support for any PlayStation device to date, it remains unlikely that AT&T TV NOW will launch on the PS5 in the future. Those specifically interested in streaming AT&T TV NOW will want to consider using an alternate device.
fuboTV on PS5
fuboTV is currently not available on PlayStation 5 and it seems highly unlikely that support for the sports-focused live TV streaming service will go live anytime soon. This is due to fuboTV largely not featuring PlayStation support in general. For example, the fuboTV app is also unavailable on the PlayStation 4 and 3 as well.
While that’s not to say PS5 support won’t arrive, there are currently no indications that it will. Anyone looking to stream fuboTV will have to rely on other devices or consider another live TV service for streaming on the PlayStation 5.
Hulu Live TV on PS5
Hulu Live TV is currently one of the very few live TV streaming services that has actively confirmed live TV support and access. Sony had previously confirmed Hulu would be available on the PlayStation 5, but that was not necessarily confirmation that live TV support within the Hulu app would also be available on the console. However, on PS5 launch day, Hulu updated its support documents to not only explain that the Hulu app is available on PlayStation 5, but it also includes all the premium app features, including live TV.
Philo on PS5
Philo might not be as popular as some of the other live TV streaming services, but it is a great option for those looking to save on the cost of live TV streaming with the price starting at just $20 per month. However, Philo is limited on support for games consoles. Right now, Philo is unavailable on both PlayStation and Xbox devices.
The likelihood of PlayStation 5 support going live anytime soon is doubtful. Those interested in accessing Philo TV will want to consider using an alternative device.
Sling TV on PS5
Like Hulu Live TV, Sling TV is a popular option when it comes to live TV streaming. With prices starting as low as $30 per month, it is a great way for those new to streaming (or looking for a low-cost option) to get access to live TV channels over the internet. However, Sling TV is currently not available on Sony’s PlayStation 5.
What’s more, there are no clear indications that app support will arrive anytime soon. Similar to fuboTV, Sling TV is also not compatible with either the PlayStation 3 or 4, and so it remains to be seen if PlayStation 5 support will ever become available.
Vidgo on PS5
Vidgo is another newer live TV streaming service with plans starting at $40 per month. However, due to the service’s age, it is currently limited in device support in general. While Vidgo can be accessed on a variety of devices including Android, iOS, set-top boxes, and web browsers, games consoles are not supported yet.
As a result, Vidgo is currently unavailable on PlayStation 5 and it is unclear if PS5 support will go live anytime soon. Any consumers looking to stream Vidgo will need to rely on other devices.
YouTube TV on PS5
YouTube TV is another highly popular live TV streaming service in the United States and is one of the very few services that can be installed on a PlayStation 5. YouTube TV originally didn’t offer support for the PS5, but as the service was already available on the PS4, it was expected that support for the newer console would eventually arrive. In May of 2021, support did arrive with YouTube TV subscribers now able to download the app directly on their console.
Live TV on PS5 summary
With the PlayStation 5 being so new, it should be expected that it will take time for all existing services and apps to gain device support. Live TV streaming apps are a little more complicated as not all services have expanded support to games consoles yet.
Although some services do support these devices, some have opted to prioritize Xbox over PlayStation. Therefore, even as the PlayStation 5 ages, and app availability expands, some of the services mentioned above are likely to remain unavailable on the PS5. In the meantime, those looking to stream live TV channels on their PlayStation 5 console will want to consider Hulu Live TV or YouTube TV.
