DirecTV and TelevisaUnivision have agreed a new multi-year deal. The agreement doesn’t only ensure DirecTV, DirecTV Stream and U-verse subscribers continue to have access to TelevisaUnivision’s portfolio of channels, but also covers the channels included with DirecTV’s new Genre Packs.
DirecTV launched its Genre Packs last week, providing consumers with the option to sign up to a cheaper and more customized live TV package. One of those Genre Packs is MiEspañol, and the expanded agreement covers some of the channels bundled with that package, including Univision, UniMás, TUDN and Galavisión.
As these channels were already confirmed to be included in DirecTV’s MiEspañol genre pack, the announcement today simply confirms their inclusion was part of the most recent agreement between the two companies.
What is new, however, is that TelevisaUnivision also confirmed the MiEspañol genre pack will soon include its ViX Premium with Ads streaming service. While a ViX Premium with Ads subscription typically costs $4.99 a month, MiEspañol subscribers will get access to the streaming service at no additional cost.
“We’re excited to expand our partnership with DirecTV, reflecting the continued dedication to our audience and the recognition that Hispanics are a fast-growing part of mainstream America,” said Mike Angus, Executive Vice President of Global Distribution and Partnerships at TelevisaUnivision. “This deal not only ensures our industry-leading content reaches millions of viewers but, also solidifies our position as the definitive leader in media among U.S. Hispanics.”
As mentioned, the new agreement reaffirms those signed up to an existing DirecTV and DirecTV Stream live TV package won’t lose access to TelevisaUnivision’s channels, also including Univision, UniMás, TUDN and Galavisión, as well as local stations serving Hispanic communities.
“Whether it’s news, live sports, telenovelas and general entertainment, local civic affairs or any of its other key genres, TelevisaUnivision is synonymous with some of the very best in Spanish-language programming,” said Rob Thun, Chief Content Officer at DIRECTV. “We look forward to continuing what has proven an important and mutually beneficial relationship for the next several years.”
